Balto received the credit, as lead dog. Balto was an amazing husky and did an amazing job, but Balto did not run the length of difficult terrain, in the horrendous conditions, or cover as much danger and ice during the Serum Run, as Togo had. His heart would break all over again, for his beloved Togo.

After the mission’s success, Balto and Kaasen became celebrities to Seppala’s great displeasure, as Togo had gone through by far the longest and most dangerous part of the serum run. Was Balto the lead dog?
With driver Gunnar Kassan nearly frozen and blind from the weather, it was the lead dog, Balto, who brought the serum safely into Nome on Feb. 2.
The dog that plays the adult Togo in the movie is a so-called Seppala Siberian named Diesel (the “Seppala Siberian” is now its own breed) and is actually Togo’s great-grandson, “14 generations removed,” according to the movie’s director.
What happened to the real Balto?
In the end, Balto simply died of old age at the Cleveland Zoo. After his death, his body was mounted and put on display in the Cleveland Museum of Natural History in Ohio. It is still on display there today. If you visit Central Park in New York City, you’ll also find a statue of Balto on display.
What happened to Togo’s paw?
A short while after Seppala had left, Togo broke free of the tether and jumped the kennel fence, getting his paw caught in the process.

Did Togo actually cross the sound?
Yes. Togo was the true champion of the Serum Run. His journey through white-out storms and twice across the unforgiving Norton Sound was by far the most perilous leg of the run. It was also the longest by roughly 200 miles.
Does Togo have a statue?
Fortunately, Togo now does have his own NYC statue in Seward Park on the Lower East Side. Also, statues of Balto and Togo can be found at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.
