Part of a continuous building envelope system, Tyvek® Tape seals Tyvek® weather barriers against air and water. Use it to add durability and energy efficiency to both residential and commercial buildings.
Is Tyvek tape necessary?
The house needs some airflow to avoid moisture build-up within the home. The manufacturer recommends only taping the Tyvek HomeWrap seams.
What is similar to Tyvek tape?
Tar Paper. Tar paper is a thick, heavy paper impregnated with tar. As long as it is not exposed to sun or wind, it does not deteriorate easily. As alternatives to Tyvek, heavier tar paper can be used for roofing and lighter tar paper as a housewrap.
Does Tyvek tape stick to wood?
Taping sheathing board seams creates a continuous vapor barrier, so moisture vapor would have nowhere to escape, reducing the wall’s drying ability. Adhesion of tape to foam and wood would be temporary, due to thermal expansion and contraction. Tyvek is breathable and flexible enough to move with the sheathing.
Is Tyvek tape an air barrier?
When Tyvek® is used under sheathing, it functions only as an air barrier, and does not protect the sheathing as a secondary weather barrier. Tyvek® has been used directly over studs where there is no sheathing, although use of sheathing is a highly recommended building practice.
Is Tyvek breathable?
A: Tyvek® is breathable, which means water vapor and gases can go through Tyvek®. The moisture vapor permeability of Tyvek® is much higher than that of plastic films. Compared to most textile fabrics, the air permeability of Tyvek® is low.
Is typar the same as Tyvek?
Typar® Building Wraps has a lower perm rating compared to Tyvek® HomeWrap®; so, a wall covered with Typar® can take longer to dry, which increases the risk of mold, mildew, and rot. Tyvek® HomeWrap® has a drainage plane so can manage bulk water better than Typar® Building Wrap, that does not have a drainage plane.
Is it OK to use two layers of Tyvek?
There is no problem with doing this. Housewrap is “breathable” by design so you won’t trap moisture anywhere. You could build a wall with ten layers of housewrap and it would be more durable, not less.
Can I use plastic instead of Tyvek?
You can use plastic if you put polyethylene between your drywall and the wall studs. This way, you should get a tighter wall without trapping moisture inside the exterior walls. If you are framing out a below-grade basement, however, do not use plastic as a vapor barrier.
What can you use as house wrap?
Asphalt felt (tar paper)—The standard requirement is Type 1 felt meeting ASTM D 226 standards. Grade D building paper—Made of asphalt-impregnated kraft paper, this house wrap is commonly used under stucco siding. Polyolefin fabric—”Plastic” house wraps typically are made of woven polyethylene or polypropylene fibers.
Can you use duct tape instead of Tyvek tape?
Duct tape won’t cut it; it’s too porous. We used the Tyvek and it’s worked well so far. Don’t use it on hard wood floors as painter’s tape; it’ll rip the polyurethane right off of the floor (lesson learned).
Can Tyvek be stapled?
Re: Attaching tyvek house wrap to the house
many of the manufactures recommend cap nails or cap staples but as long as its being covered in the near future and you staple it well you will have no problems. I always use staples if I’m wrapping directly over the plywood.
Does Tyvek go over insulation?
DuPont™ Tyvek® wraps can be installed UNDER or OVER exterior foam insulation. The DuPont™ Tyvek® wrap should be installed on the same plane as the window flanges to allow for the most effective installation.
