The vast majority of new TRV’s are bidirectional and can be fitted to either the flow or return, but it is always good practice to fit them to the flow side. If a non bidirectional TRV is fitted on the return side it will create a vibrating sound as the water tries to flow though it.
Do TRV go on inlet or outlet?
A TRV should always be fitted to the inlet on the radiator and the LSV to the outlet.
How do you know which is flow and return on a radiator?
Turn off the heating until it is cool. Turn it on and aim the laser alternatively at the two tails. The one that heats fastest/first is the flow.
Do radiators have a flow direction?
The new radiator is marked for the direction of flow; through the valve and in at the top of the radiator.
Can I fit TRV on all radiators?
If your boiler is fitted with a flow meter – that detects when all of your radiator valves are closed, you can install a TRV on every radiator if you want to. You can leave any radiator without a TRV, but it makes more sense for you to select the radiator in the room with your wall thermostat.
Do radiators have an inlet and outlet?
Every radiator in a hot water system has an inlet and outlet. The inlet is to take hot water in and the outlet is to let the water back out.
Does inlet and outlet matter on a radiator?
Yes it does. They have a baffle or diverter near the flow. So it is imperative that the flow is connected to the inlet port ,and return to the outlet port.
What do arrows on TRV mean?
Until about 1995 all thermostatic radiator valves were uni-directional. They were made with a single-headed arrow which marked the direction of flow. They had to be fitted so that the water passing through them followed the direction of the arrow. This meant that they were normally fitted to the flow pipe.
Should radiator valves be open or closed?
How to Tell if the Radiator Valve Is Open or Closed? This is a common question, but the answer is dead simple. Turn it all the way to the left, and if it won’t go anymore, it’s closed. Otherwise, it’s some degree of open.
What is the quickest way to balance your radiators?
How To Balance Radiators
Turn off your heating.Open all radiator valves.Note the speed each radiator heats up.Allow your heating to cool down.Turn your heating back on.Adjust the fastest radiator.Repeat for other radiators.
Do you bleed a radiator when it is on or off?
Do You Bleed Your Radiators With The Heating On Or Off? You should always bleed your radiators when the heating is switched off and the system has cooled down, because bleeding radiators with hot water flowing through the system increases the risk of scalds and burns.
Does it matter which way you connect a radiator?
In terms of which side each valve should go, in the majority of cases this should not matter e.g. the lockshield and wheel head or thermostatic valve can go either side of the radiator due to the nature of the system being on a loop however if you are fitting thermostatic valves then generally these go on the incoming
Does it matter which way round you connect a radiator?
If you fit the radiator in the wrong orientation it can result in a reduction of output, noise from the heating system, or even in extreme cases you can end up with a radiator that doesn’t do anything other than take up wall space. This also goes for the valves.
Does flow and return matter on a vertical radiator?
Yes. As it is at present the flow runs straight thru the bottom of the rad and out the other side. Water will follow the path of least resistance.
Should there be a thermostatic valve on every radiator?
We recommend you fit a thermostatic valve on every radiator. But there’s no need to fit one in a room with a fixed room thermostat.
Do TRV valves fail?
If you cannot get the plunger working again, then the valve has failed and will need to be replaced completely. See below section on how to change a TRV for help with this. The second problem that can occur is that the thermostat can fail.
Can you put a TRV in the same room as a thermostat?
So all rooms can have trv except where fixed thermostat is. so if setting the TRV in the hall to off but the room thermostat to 28, then the boiler will stay on even if the rest of the house has reached 28 because the hall is cold and the room thermostat can only tell the temperature in the hall, where it is situated.
