shower weep holes

Whatever you do, do not fill those weep holes. They’re an integral part of the drainage system to keep water from building up behind the brick. If allowed to contact any untreated lumber, this water will cause serious wood rot, mold and, eventually, structural problems with your home.

Why is water coming out of my weep holes?

The excess mortar overflows into the airspace, where it hardens. When water enters the brick cavity, it can pool on the hardened mortar, and subsequently leak into the house. Also, excess mortar at the bottom of the wall can block the weep holes, preventing water in the brick cavity from draining to the exterior.

How do I get the weep holes out of my shower drain?

Pour 3/4 cup baking soda into the drain, sprinkling some of it down the weep holes. Immediately follow with 1/2 cup of white vinegar. Cover the drain pipe opening and surrounding weep holes with a flat rubber plug or old rag. Let it sit for about 20 minutes.

How do you fix a blocked weep hole?

To make sure the weep holes are working properly, spray the outside of the window with a garden hose – a steady stream of clean water should exit from the holes. If it doesn’t, use a wire hanger or compressed air to force the blockage out. Re-test with fresh water to ensure they’re completely cleaned.

Can a house flood through weep holes?

No. Unless your home is a submarine the exterior materials along with doors and windows are not watertight and will succumb to the flood waters. Standing water in contact with brick walls (or other veneers) will inevitably enter the structure and plugging weep holes will not improve the situation.

Can you caulk weep holes?

Weep holes should not be sealed to keep pests out.

Though homeowners naturally want to block pests, weep holes should not be sealed with caulk or mortar. The holes are still necessary to drain water and to ventilate the air space.

Do all shower drains have weep holes?

The weep holes are small holes that connect to the main drain, allowing water that enters them to feed into the drainpipe. If your shower drain is all one piece with the shower pan, you may also have weep holes in the pan itself.

Is a weep hole protector necessary?

The purpose of a weep hole protector is to provide for proper drainage of any water that might leech through the shower tile or grout and work its way through the base (Portland cement and sand). You don’t want this water to pool under the base and on top of the pan liner.

Does flood water come through walls?

Flood water will tend to find its way and penetrate “weak” points in the building such as areas where there is cracking. Cracks to walls, within the brick, blockwork, mortar joints or render, provide a direct path for floodwater to enter a property.

Where do weep holes go?

Weep holes are typically found in the outer masonry leaf of cavity walls, just above the flashing. They can also be found above windows, doors or other penetrations. They should be provided at regular intervals so as to allow any moisture collected by cavity trays to escape.
