Different Types of Mason Jars Used for Canning
The mouth of the jar has threads on its outer perimeter so it can accept a metal ring when it is screwed down onto it. Other common names for the original Mason jar include Ball jars (after the Ball Corporation), fruit jars and simply glass canning jars.
Are plastic Mason jars airtight?
The ring and cap method of sealing these jars is not necessarily airtight on its own. That method was designed for the canning process. During that process the air is sucked out of the jar and the rubber-lined lid is sealed, airtight, against the lip of the jar.
Are plastic canning lids safe?

Is Kerr better than Ball?
These shapes and sizes can also be found with the Kerr marker, but only out west. I prefer the Kerr jars to Ball, because they have a smooth back (it’s perfect for labels) but they’re nearly impossible to get where I live.
Are Mason jars and Kilner jars the same?
The Kilner brand is owned by the Rayware Company, which owns other well-known names such as Mason Cash (the famous brown mixing bowls), etc. Kilner’s jars are currently made in China (as of 2022).
Do plastic Mason jar lids work?
