I’ve read a stock 700r4 can handle 350 lb-ft of torque. But some were rated higher depending on it’s application. 1989 was not a high horsepower maybe 230 or torque motor if I recall correctly. You could just have that trans freshened up to handle new motor.
What year 700R4 transmission was the best?
Generally, 1987 and up TH700R4s or 1990-’93 4L60 units are the most desirable. Before trying to install this transmission in your vehicle, you should thoroughly check the unit and refurbish it, if necessary.
Is the 700R4 better than the 4L60E?
If the transmission has a large 18-pin electronic connector above the passenger side pan rail, it’s a 4L60E, as seen here. If it has a cable connection near the cooler lines on the passenger’s side, that’s a 700R4. The good news is that either way, you win.
What is the problem with 700R4 transmission?
A notable issue of the 700R4 transmission is overheating. Usually, the vehicles that use this transmission produce high power output and are put to extreme use, which could lead to overheating. The overheating of the ATF could cause damage to the internal components of the car.
Can you run a 700R4 without a computer?
To run a 700-R4 trans behind a carbureted engine without a computer, at the very least the TV cable must be hooked up to the carburetor and properly adjusted. Not just a simple kickdown cable like your TH350 analogue, the TV cable controls line pressure and shift points.
Will a 700R4 bolt up to a LS engine?

Will this harm the 4th gear? Re: 700R4 With No Lockup? IT wont harm 4th , 4th gear is hydraulic and as long as the cable and transmission are in good shape you should be good .
Can you replace a 700R4 with a 4L80E?
No, neither the 4L60E or 4L80E will directly swap in. Your 4L60 or 700R4 is a hydraulically shifted trans with an electric lockup in it where as the 4L60E and 4L80E are both fully electrically shifted.
Can I swap my 700R4 with a 4L60E?
A 4l60E is just and electronic shift 700r4. You wouldn’t really benefit from it other then there would be more wires to fool around with. But make sure the 4l60E has the upgrade or it will go soon also.
Can you beef up a 700R4 transmission?
By changing some parts in the valvebody, your transmission—in this case a 700-R4—can be “reprogrammed” to have firmer, power-saving shifts. With the TCI Automotive Constant Pressure Valve Body kit you can also fix one big pain with the 700-R4 transmission: the TV cable.
What transmission can replace a 700R4?
In 1990, GM changed the name of the 700r4 transmission to 4L60, which stood for 4-speed Longitudinal 6,000 lb gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). For 1993, the hydraulic shifting system was replaced with electronic controls (4L60E).

What is the difference between a 350 Turbo and a 700R4?
The 700R4 has an overdrive while the TH350 does not. Overdrives allow for high-speed cruising, which saves fuel while lowering torque.
