Keep Lettuce Plants Well-Watered
Water your lettuce plants every day—and even more often if it is extremely hot and dry. The lettuce leaves are mostly water and will desiccate and wilt in strong sunlight and dry soil. Lettuce roots tend to be shallow, so frequent watering is more important than deep watering.
Can you overwater lettuce?
Too much or too little water can spell disaster for lettuce plants at every stage of growth. Insufficient moisture will cause lettuce seeds and seedlings to fail, while too much water will contribute to fungal and bacterial growth that can kill young seedlings.
Does lettuce need full sun?
The ideal lettuce growing location for spring and fall is in a spot that receives full sun. If you plan on growing lettuce during the summer or in warm planting zones, partial shade can provide protection from the heat.
How much water do lettuce seedlings need?
Place your lettuce seeds about 1 1/2″ to 2″ below the soil. The soil covering the seeds should not be densely packed. Water every other day at the most. You could easily water twice a week when sprouting lettuce plants to increase your chances of healthy plants.

Larger varieties of lettuce, such as heads of romaine, can require up to 18 inches between each sprawling, leafy plant. Lettuce seed packets will alert you to the spacing requirements, but in a pinch, give the lettuce seedlings a good 8 inches of room to flourish.
