Our pigment of choice for Shrinky Dinks would be permanent markers (sharpies). They work well for a variety of ages and are ready to roll straight out of the package. This is a great starter set with a variety of 30 different colors for under $13!
What can I color Shrinky Dink with?
To color them, it is best to use sharpie type permanent markers. Keep in mind that colors darken as the plastic shrinks. You can also use colored pencils to color shrinky dinks, but the standard, clear kind will need to be sanded lightly in order for the color to transfer onto the plastic.
Do crayons work on Shrinky Dinks?
Please don’t use water soluble markers or wax crayons to color the shrinky dinks They don’t work. Regular school pencil crayons do work just fine.
How do you seal colors on Shrinky Dinks?

Step 1: Cut out and color your shrink plastic. I use a standard hole punch for the holes. Step 2: Shrink them! I have used two different methods to shrink plastic. Step 3: Seal with embossing powder. Step 4: Let cool. Step 5: Add hardware.
Can you put glitter on Shrinky Dinks?
Seal and Embellish – Once your Shrinky Dinks have cooled it’s time to seal them so that the colored pencil does not rub off. I used my favorite sealant and sprayed one layer over the designs. To add extra sparkle, use glitter glue on the smooth side of your finished design.
What can you use to color shrink plastic?
Markers, inks, pencils, and acrylic paint are ideal to use for coloring images on shrink plastic before shrinking. Colors become deeper and more saturated when the shrink plastic has been shrunk. It is often a good idea to use a shade or two lighter than the required shade to account for this.
Can you use microns on Shrinky Dinks?
I use a . 3 Sakura micron I bought specifically for using it on shrink plastic. Whatever micron you choose to use, make sure it’s not one you love too much. Remember to not smudge your ink!
Why are my Shrinky Dinks not flat?
Try heating it longer. I’ve never done whole sheets before either. One thing that I did find was that although the directions say to heat the plastic on cut up brown paper sack, I got better results by heating directly on the cookie sheet.

What side of shrink plastic do you draw on?
Coloring Your Creations
The rough side of the shrink art is the side receptive to ink or colored pencils. If your shrink art has no rough side, scuff up one side with a piece of fine sandpaper; then wipe off the dust with a rag or paper towel.
Can you use a hair dryer to shrink Shrinky Dinks?
Blow dryer: Your regular blow dryer will work to shrink plastic! Similar to the heat tool, keep an eye on the plastic shape and use a skewer or tweezers to keep the plastic relatively in place as you shrink it.
How do you keep shrinky dinks from breaking?
Use good scissors when cutting shrink plastic. Sharper scissors will give you cleaner cuts and cause less cracking/splintering on the edges. I use a pair of Fiskars titanium nitride scissors (they were my ‘nice’ scissors before I got my Kai set a few years back).
How do you emboss shrinky dinks?
How do I use it? After you’ve shrunken your shrinky, sprinkle on a layer of embossing powder. Try not to make it TOO thick, as it WILL burn. With the oven still on, slip your shrinky (with embossing powder) back in, and watch it melt.
