National Electrical Code & Outlets
The National Electrical Code (NEC) does not limit the number of outlets per circuit. The NEC only states that a circuit cannot supply more than 80% of the circuit breakers limits. This is so the circuit breaker does not constantly trip during regular use.
How many outlets can be on a single circuit?
There is a maximum of 12 outlets connected to a circuit. If their total number does not exceed 12 outlets, this may consist of 12 light outlets or 12 plug outlets.

Can I wire lights and outlets on the same circuit?
Yes, if you want, you can use separate circuits for your outlets and lights. In this process usually, a 15 amp circuit is used for lighting. For the outlets, you can use a 20 amp one. You can use 12 gauge wires for your lights on both the 20 and 15 amp circuits.
There is NO limit to amount of lighting or receptacles you put on a circuit. There is a limit to the amount on a single switch though. By code minimum you could put 500 receptacle and 500 60 watt lights on 500 switches on a single 15A circuit and still be code complaint.

What happens if you use 14 gauge wire on a 20 amp circuit?
I would say 14 gauge wire anywhere on a 20 amp circuit is not OK. The purpose of the breaker is to cut off power before the wiring overheats. If you plug in several devices on an outlet that total 20 amps, you will exceed the safe working capacity of the 14 gauge wire without tripping the breaker.
