When adjusting a shift cable, make sure the lower unit is in neutral. Spin the prop to be sure, it should spin free. Place the cable end on the engine shift shaft attachment, then see where the cable adjustment “nut” lines up with the cable attachment point on the engine.

Grab the end of the lower cable where you just removed it from the stud and pull. While pulling, turn the propeller clockwise. The throttle now is in full reverse position. Move the lower cable up and down until it fits in the slot between the studs.

You need to pull it pretty tight before clamping it to the derailleur. Probably as tight as you can. Usually I find that’s still not tight enough, so I screw the barrel adjuster down all the way before putting the cable in and then open it up until the tension is correct.
