Etch Primers are intended for use as primers on new or relatively sound ferrous and non-ferrous metal surfaces. Examples of the types of surfaces on which these products would be used are light- weight tubing or thin sheet metal surfaces that cannot be prepared by abrasive blast cleaning.
Is etch primer the same as acid etch primer?
Acid and self etch are basically the same stuff. Neither will prevent rust if stored in a place with any humidity. Also some types of primers and finish can’t be sprayed directly over the etch primers.
Can you paint directly over etch primer?
A etch primer cannot be painted directly over. Surfacers and other primer/sealers are required to apply it. I have used semigloss black spray paint directly over etching primer before without any problems.
Can you paint over acid etch primer?
Self Etching primer can in fact be painted over but you need to closely follow the manufacturers application and top coat guide. As a rule of thumb Self Etching Primers need another coat of primer over them to fully seal everything up long term.
What is the difference between etch primer and normal primer?
You should know that regular primer can also be used on metal. Though regular primers won’t work great on metal and aluminum, the primer coating will still produce a result that will be smooth and durable for a while. Self-etching primer on the other hand can only be used on metal.
When should you use self etching primer?
After you remove the rust scales from the metal on your car, you need to apply self etching primer. It’s a mix of phosphoric acid and zinc. The way it works is that the acid forces the zinc into the top of the metal. It’s purely a surface coating, and it doesn’t stop the rust.
Do I need etch primer on bare metal?
Both Epoxy Primer and Self-Etch primer (Self-Etching primer) can be used on bare metal. Both provide corrosion protection, and both can be top-coated with primer surfacer.
How long can you leave etch primer before painting?
Allow the final coat of Self Etching Primer to dry for a minimum of 3-4 hours before dry sanding, or 15 minutes before wet sanding with #400 grit sandpaper. Do not use near open flame. Dry and recoat times are based on 70°F (21°C) and 50% relative humidity.
Can you put body filler over etch primer?
Once the epoxy primer is down you no longer have to worry about rust while doing your repairs – especially since you can apply body filler right on top of it. Then simply respray the areas you worked on to re-seal them.
Does etch primer need to be sanded?
Sanding the self-etching primer is not recommended by most manufacturers, as it is based on acid. As a reminder, self-etching primer is primarily an acid base with pigments added, so you should wear a mask when applying it.
Can you use etch primer over rust converter?
Can I apply a primer coat over Rust Converter? Yes, an oil based primer may be applied over Rust Converter, but is not required.
What primer should I use on bare metal?
Simply put, epoxy is the best primer for bare metal, making it excellent for newly fabricated metal parts or ones that have been fully stripped. 2. Mixed Surfaces – Some primers and coatings need the entire surface to be uniform and all the same material.
