Is a #12 screw the same as 1 4?

What does a 1/4 20 screw mean?
1/4″-20 x 2″
The 1/4″ refers to the bolt diameter (in inches), the -20 refers to the threads per inch meaning that there are 20 threads per inch on this bolt, and the 2″ refers to the length (also in inches).
What is nominal screw size?
The nominal length of a screw is the length or size which is used to define the length of the fastener, it is the name of the screw size, and not necessarily the overall length of the component.
What are bolt sizes?
To measure the diameter of screws and bolts, you measure the distance from the outer thread on one side to the outer thread on the other side. This is called the major diameter and will usually be the proper size of the bolt.
How do you measure head size on a nut?
Place the end of a measuring tape on one of the flat sides of the nut’s outer perimeter. Stretch the tape measure across the nut’s diameter to the flat-side directly across from the one your pulling from. If the nut is metric, count the number of lines on the tape measure to find the measurement.
Are #14 and 1/4 screws the same?
We see that #14 would be 0.242 inches and #1/4 is 0.250 inches. One can see that this is only a 0.008″ or 0.2 mm (200 um) difference between screw diameters. It is not difficult to imagine many situations where this size similarity caused mistakes.
